The 2nd Annual National Disability Summit 2011

I was delighted to be asked to present at the 2nd Annual National Disability Summit 2011 in September which was held in Melbourne.

I gave an International Keynote Address: UK Disability Services – from State Provision to Independent ‘For Profit’ Provision.

I have worked in the UK care sector for over 30 years and I can see many differences in the ways in which care is provided and paid for in Australia but also many similarities.
Similarities in that both countries wish to find ways to provide and fund the best care provision for both their disabled and older populations.

The Productivity Commission in Australia has this year published their reports with reference to: Disability Care and Support and Caring for Older Australians and the overview and recommendations in the reports echo many of the factors that we began to work with in the UK as a result of our legislation in the early 1990’s.

As a result of my presentation and a later ‘Question Time’ panel hour, many questions were asked both at the time and with members of the audience who made contact after the Summit finished.

As a result of being part of the two day event, I met many interesting people, had motivating discussions and learnt about the fascination of ‘do different’.
